He's a Magician by birth but he sucks at magic, and I mean SUCKS, which has always left him an outcast. A Firebrand general took him in, and the Shade people taught him how to fight with weapons, so he has a certain degree of loyalty to the Firebrands and an invincible love of both this general and the Shades (whom his best friend Torrin is one of). He has always been treated either like dirt or like an object, and therefore relates to Aida's predicament of always being used like a tool--and treats her very well, despite their being on opposing sides. Consequently they form a close friendship.
